The Quillette Memorandum
TGBL just came across a provocative and startling piece written by a former NYC high school teacher, who served her tour of duty in several high schools of the Big Apple. Quillette is an online libertarian-ish forum for expressing ideas, which Quillette itself may or may not agree with. The important thing is not who agrees, if it is politically correct, if people are uncomfortable. Paramount is the expression of the writer to contribute intellectually and stimulatingly to further our understanding of an issue.
In Mary Hudson’s “Public Education’s Dirty Little Secret”, one certainly pays attention to her first-person narrative. Highly personal, Mary’s piece discusses her romp through several schools and the slice of life she took away from her stints as a foreign-language teacher. TGBL will not reveal what the dirty secret is, but rather we prevail upon you to read the article and discover it yourself. You may or may not agree with the author but, especially for the combat veterans of the NYC front lines, you’ll nod your head in recognition. It is not for the faint of heart, the closed minded, the intractable. The French teacher’s bittersweet petite memoir opens the eye and questions our assumptions. A dollop to Mary for a job well done.
